The construction industry has been an integral part of the lives of the past three generations of Jones'. Don Jones (Pat's Grandfather) began his construction career as an owner of Iowa Coal and Grading from 1945-1955 in Boone, Iowa. Iowa Coal and Grading was a strip mining company that also performed various excavation work. In 1955, Don became a Job Superintendent for Boone Construction, and later became partner and Vice-President in 1958. At Boone Construction, Don was in charge of the Concrete Ready Mix Plants that the company owned in Boone, Perry, Ogden, and Madrid. He was also in charge of the General Construction Division, which built City Water Plants, Disposal Plants, Churches, Schools, and various projects for Iowa State University. Don retired in 1979.
Neil Jones (Pat's Father) started in construction right out of high school in 1961 when he bought a CAT D7 Bulldozer and began his own excavation company while also farming on the side. In 1972, a local concrete paving company that Neil had worked with on several jobs offered him an opportunity to become a partner in their company. So in 1972 Neil became a partner in Glover Construction. They traveled throughout Iowa performing dirt and concrete work on city streets. They also produced their own concrete with a portable batch plant. In 1975 Glover Construction purchased a brand new Pav-Saver Slip Form Paver. This piece of equipment dramatically increased the company's production and spurred tremendous growth. Glover Construction also added a bridge building crew. Although work was good, Neil and the Glover family grew tired of "life on the road" and decided to sell the business at an auction in 1979. Neil and John Glover then became partners in real estate, and remained close friends until John's passing in 2009. After the sale of Glover Construction, Neil worked for Boone County Secondary Roads Dept., where he was a Heavy Equipment Operator and retired from there in 2009.
Pat Jones worked for an excavation company while attending the University of Northern Iowa, where he graduated from in 2001 with a BA in Finance. After a brief stint as a financial planner, he returned to the construction industry and went to work for Cedar Valley Corp, a concrete paving company based out of Waterloo, Iowa. In 2005, Pat and his wife Maggie decided to move back to her hometown of West Point, Iowa, where Pat became an owner in JDM Contracting Co. While at JDM, the company grew from doing residential to mainly commercial projects. In 2013 the company purchased a slip-form paver and began doing municipal street paving work. In 2015 Pat decided to venture out on his own and founded Jones Contracting Corp.
